7 Most Common Mistakes in Social Media Marketing

September 10, 2014 By admin

Social media marketing is a powerful way to spread your content, but if not used correctly, it could be harmful for your site.

There are a variety of branding and marketing options nowadays, such as direct mail marketing, display ads , mobile marketing – social media marketing is currently on the rise and the more you learn the better.

Mistakes are always just around the corner and here below you can read some of the most common ones.

1. Create Thousands of Profiles

The first thing you do is create a Facebook Fan Page, then a Twitter profile and a LinkedIn account.

And then … It’s easy to get carried away with Social Media: there are many social networks, and each one is presented as the solution to all your problems, but the truth is that you do not need every every social media account available.

Unless you are not suffering from presenteeism mania, you should avoid to subscribe to everything you find online.

Just try to figure out what you really need and what really works for you!

2. Do Not Take Care of Your Accounts

Often who has thousand social media accounts around the web, do not take care of them.

A slightly edited account (not completely filled in the fields, not updated or slightly) is not a pretty sight.

And do not think it’s just one person tought, but I think everyone who see your profile will think the same.

It is better not to have it, than make a bad work in a social media account!

3. Use the Same Strategy for Each Channel

Every social media network and every communication channel you’re using to interact with your audience has very specific rules.

And you must know that to be truly decisive in any environment you have to know its rules, the dynamics of interaction and strategies that will lead you to become a reference point for the audience.

All this translates into two words: time and effort.

4. Walking with a Snotty Nose

Do you want to accept all the friendships that you receive, even the sad account created only for sending spam?

You can do it, it’s your right, but remember to create a healthy interaction with the contacts closest to your field of interest.

Just remember not to walk with a snotty nose: social media are so called precisely because it’s social!

5. Confusing Spam for Promotion

You have created your Twitter account, Facebook and everything else to share your business or simply to spread the contents of your blog.

Obviously, this seems right!

But remember, not to turn youself into a spammer, becoming one of those people who send a thousand times the same content.

Try to behave naturally and to share valuable resources.

Also mention other useful content and it is your duty to quote the author, of course!

6. Ignore the Monitoring

So you have good relationships with all your contacts, you can get retweeted your content 1,000 times a day and you are in the circles of many people online.

But have you ever thought that you need to measure your social media progress?

I know that the measurement of social media is still difficult to realize, but the network offers a range of tools precise enough to monitor your online presence.

So why not use these tools?

In this post, Stuart J. Davidson lists 30 best social media monitoring tools for your business :30 BEST SOCIAL MEDIA MONITORING TOOLS FOR BUSINESS

7. Jump the Gun

Haste is the mother of all evils, it has always been so.

And one of the biggest mistakes you can do is pretend to reach superstar numbers after a few weeks on Social Media Marketing.

In the online world nothing is taken for granted and, unless you are a VIP in real world, you will need time to create big numbers in your social media accounts.

Just be patient, share good content and build relationships!

And soon the results will come.

    Hi Erik,

Top notch writing man. Love it.

You have a great point especially with the part about spam and over sharing. I used to think that if I can flood the timeline most of the time, people are going to read my post.

Gah, that was a wrong move.

Lesson learned! Nowadays, I make sure I share something real good or else, don’t share at all!

    Thanks for sharing man.

    Hi Erik,

Yes, you are very true. Having multiple accounts at social networks can harm our website and there is no use to have this. Instead of this, we should manage single account and try to active more and more there.

I like the facebook most other than all networks. It is very convenient to use and be active.

Thanks for sharing such a wonderful post.

    Have a great day ahead!

    Hi Erik,

You are right in all that you mentioned 🙂

These are the very mistakes most bloggers make when they tend to create several accounts, which are easy to create but tough to manage.

Speaking of myself, I was pretty happy with my single accounts all over, but it was suggested by many that you should have one for your blog too, so I created accounts on G+, Facebook, and Twitter for my blog as well, but maintaining so many isn’t easy – you need to devote time updating them too, isn’t it? I wonder how people manage 4-5-6 of them!!

It’s better instead to spend time connecting and building relationships with fellow bloggers, something I strongly believe in.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week 🙂

Hi Erik you have made some really great points. What I can say is that I have learned my lessons in a short space of 2 years since I started my blog

Multiple social media accounts is a bad idea for sure, especially if you are not getting the time to manage them. Recently I am so tied up with projects at work I am doing badly with my online accounts I am considering deactivating one or two.

I have run into snags with both the snotty nose and the spammers. Just that I never had on the kind of lens that would help me to identify them from the beginning.

Thanks for this eye opener post. Have a great day.

Great post Erik! I see mostly mistake 1 & 2 all the time. The basic reason behind these two generally are

    1) Failing to identify where the target audience is and creating the profile just because everybody else is doing 2) Trying to get dofollow or nofollow profile links.

As they say “You have to be everywhere” which is so damn true but to be exact let’s rephrase “You have to be everywhere, where your target audience resides and engage with them”. as you mentioned in your article it’s all about relationships.

Will end with a famous Ben Grossman quote “New marketing is about the relationships, not the medium”.

    Hi Erik,

    Yes you are 100% right,
There is no need to join all social networking sites. Just seek needy Sites and participate there.

I like the most Facebook and Google Plus. Mostly I active on these site.

Any way Good Content. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

    Hi Erik,

We all know that mistakes are the part of our life but if we repeat them again and again then it’s not bearable.

People use social networks in their daily life and most of bloggers, marketers and else try to promote their business via social media. But are they doing it right? I have noticed many profiles with same name and picture. I mean how can they focus at their one original profile?

Like you have mentioned that same strategy never works good at every social platform. Twitter has it’s own usage where Facebook has it’s own.

Thanks for mentioning the mistakes. I will remember not to repeat again.

Hope you are enjoying your week,:)

    Hi Erik,

I love all seven points you have given. The best of all is number 7 for me. Jumping the gun is one of the worst mistakes I see people doing. Sometimes they use some kind of automated system whereby they will post and two minutes later, there will be hundreds of Google+ likes and shares. Go figure?

For me, I like to take things slow, but sure. I recently reached 500 likes on my Facebook Fan Page. To some, it may sound silly, but I know each and every person on there and do socialize with them. I rather have quality than quantity any day!

    Hey Erik,

Great stuff. When I first started out online, I subscribed to absolutely everything. You name it I subscribed to it … because I thought that was the right thing to do. After all, I wanted to be social. But I learned afterwards that was a horrible way to go. When you’re trying to do everything at once, you actually end up doing nothing.

    Excellent points.

Hope you have a great day.

The ideal method of avoiding your content being identified as spam and the other dangers listed in the article above is to concentrate on writing your content to help and give useful information. This contrasts with writing with the aim of attracting traffic to the content – which bears the risk of overzealous writing.
